What a lieutenant governor does
Usually first in line if the governor leaves office. In many states they preside over the state senate. Powers vary more than almost any other statewide job.

The office
Most states elect a lieutenant governor. Some pair the office with the governor on one ticket; some elect it separately. A few states have no separate LG and put succession in the senate president or secretary of state.
Do not assume this is a “mini-governor.” Read the state constitution. In Texas the LG is a powerful senate leader. In other states the job is mostly succession and ceremony.
What they can change
Typical duties, when the state grants them:
- Succeed the governor on death, resignation, or removal.
- Preside over the state senate and break ties, where the constitution says so.
- Chair specified boards or commissions (varies by statute).
Money they vote on
Usually none as a budget author. Influence is indirect: senate procedure, board votes, or acting as governor. If your ballot has an LG race, check whether they actually chair a finance or education board.
Who they can help — and who they cannot
Useful when the question is succession, senate procedure, or a board they chair. Not the office for zoning, school curriculum, or federal benefits.
